How to get the best laid down, sleek edges for your updos!

One day in the Salon, one of the customers kept looking at my hair with a question in her eyes (I had an updo using braiding hair) and I guess when she couldn't take it anymore, bluntly asked me if I had relaxed hair and why I was running a natural hair salon if my hair was relaxed! I thought it was quite funny because she was really convinced my hair was relaxed and I had to whip out my pictures and show her what my hair looked like.

Now, the reason she was so convinced I had relaxed hair ( and the reason why I have gotten asked this question a few times when my hair is in a protective up-do with braiding hair) is because my edges were very well laid down and slicked back.

Now, people use edge control alone and while this is quite good all by itself, I prefer to use the method which I am about to describe.
What you will need are:
1. Eco Styler Gel
2. Bristle Brush
3. Silk/Satin Scarf
4. Moisturizer of choice

The first thing to do (of course) is to moisturize your hair paying particular attention to your edges in order to minimize any incidence of manipulation breakage. The more supple and moisturized your hair is, the more elasticized the strands are, eliminating breakage that comes from styling manipulation and the better your styles will turn out!

After moisturizing, apply eco styler gel to your edges (front and back) and then with your bristle brush,  brush in an upward motion several times, smoothing the hair down as you do so.

Put the hair up in a ponytail (if your style involves more than one ponytail, repeat the above process for EACH SECTION before putting into a ponytail) and then tie your silk/satin scarf TIGHT around your head.

Leave the scarf on for at least 20 minutes (sometimes I go up to 45 minutes) and once you loosen the scarf, voila! your edges have have set into sleek, tame fabulousness!

Enjoy!

  1. Your edges are SO laid!!
I'm using the same ORS edge control pictured in the post and it holds up very poorly in very humid environments. Sigh.
I have to give your method a go.
Wondering if it'd still work for me. I have somewhat thick fuzzy edges, but they're way shorter than the rest of my hair, so they can't be held up with the rest of whatever I'm packing.
    Still, I will try.
    Thank you!
    :)

  2. Thank you An Afrikan Butterfly! I really love this method - it sets edges beautifully! I'm sure this will work for you - make sure your edges are well moisturized first as that seems to help the eco styler hold better - and tie that scarf tight! lol. Good luck!

  3. Thank God I found this blog, I have the moisturiser, and I found it left residue in my hair, unless I mixed it with oils, I will try this when I take out my Ghana weaving, thank God you are in Lagos. I came 3 years ago, to learn every brading technique possible, all I heard was "But they say you schooled in London, why are you carrying 'Virgin' hair" I will catch up on all other posts tomorrow.

    1. Hi! Eco styler is just a brand name for a styling gel. It comes in different variants (olive oil, argan oil etc) in the picture above, the olive oil variant is what I used. The moisturizer is one by 'design essentials' and edge control is different from Eco styler as that is mainly used to 'tame' your edges and give you a sleek look. Hope that helps! We also deliver to Ibadan so if you browse our products on klsnaturals.com you can send an email to info@klsnaturals.com stating what you would like and we'll arrange it!

    1. I've been wearing crochet braids for the past 4 months and my hair has grown a lot. I've been natural for 4 years and just know learning to love and "listen" to my hair. I don't use a lot of products on it and I keep it moisturized. I just choose a braid pattern that I like (lately it's been a side part) and I use my crochet tool and less than 2 hours later, I have a new do. I love crochet! Like there's so many diff hair to try. You'll love it. As far as cost, it depends on the hair you buy. Freestress hair in Texas is about $5 a bag. And I would use 4 bags. I'd use one more if I want a lot of hair (which can ge tout of control is the hair is thick).

  8. I am very happy to announce that the cannabis oil is for real. Two years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and it was already in stage 4 before I got to hear of the cannabis oil. I had no hope what so ever because the doctors had told me I have few Months left. I ordered online from Dr. Paul cannabis oil and it was delivered to me in 3 days of request along with the prescription, immediately I started applying for 6 weeks and the results was wonderful. Don’t die when you have the cure right beside you. You can create your own cannabis oil but it would be best to contact the right source to get the right quality cannabis oil. In my case I contacted simpsonrick95@gmail.com they helped me and I am for ever indebted to them just save your life by ordering for the cannabis oil, contact: Dr. Paul and get the oil treatment from him, try it and you will not regret it because it truly works and here is his email: simpsonrick95@gmail.com
