The powerful goodness of the amazing Moringa Tree!

Moringa Seeds
For at least a year now I've been hearing about 'Moringa' and how beneficial it is. I didn't really pay much attention to it until recently when I was at the Salon day out organised by Savvy and Chic and had a discussion with the lovely lady who was at the Kalos Health and Beauty stand. Kalos have a wide range of products that are made from Moringa oil, leaves and seeds.

I was intrigued and made it a point to go read up on it and my goodness! I was blown away by the numerous benefits the WHOLE tree has to offer. Truly it's earned its name as the 'Miracle Tree' as all parts of the tree are packed with nutrients and antioxidants.

Oil is extracted from the seeds and roots, the flowers can be cooked and eaten, while the bark, sap, seeds, oil, leaves, roots and flowers are used to make traditional medicine.

That's not all - moringa leaves contain 7 times more potassium than bananas,  twice the amount of protein and four times the amount of calcium contained in milk.  Furthermore they contain 7 times more vitamin c than oranges, 25 times the amount of iron in spinach, 4 times more beta carotene than carrots, 36 times the amount of magnesium found in eggs and 50 times more vitamin B3 than peanuts!

If you're thinking 'what's that got to do with growing my hair?' remember from my previous post on Eating your way to healthy hair, that all these nutrients are necessary to build strong hair from within.

Moringa contains ALL the essential amino acids needed by the body - including Metheonine which prevents hair, skin and nail problems by providing sulphur to the body; and Threonine which aids metabolism, preventing fat build up in the liver while boosting digestive and intestinal tracts.

It is also an immunity stimulant and improves the body's natural defence mechanism when consumed as part of a daily diet- it is for this reason that it is prescribed to patients with AIDS.

It also increases energy levels; boosts focus, mental clarity and stamina; maintains healthy blood sugar levels, helps maintain healthier blood pressure levels, has anti aging properties, aids in the removal of free radicals from the skin while restoring a healthier, youthful and more vital complexion; promotes hair growth and so much more!

I knew I had to get me some Moringa in my daily diet/beauty routine! The Beauty Bar decided to stock the product range from Kalos and yours truly decided to test out as many of them as I could.

First thing I tried was the powder - mixing a tea spoon into my morning weetabix. Now let me insert a caveat here - if you don't like 'earthy greeny' tastes, this will put you off big time. But my palate is used to such tastes having been introduced to wheat grass a few years ago.

Everything was fine - went to the salon and was re twisting a client's locs when my tummy started to 'sway' lollll. I thought nothing of it till it began to sing and I respectfully excused myself and ran to the loo! I don't know how exactly to describe it but afterwards, I was literally floating. My mood perked up considerably and I seemed to have more energy. I didn't need telling twice. The powder is now part of my diet.

I then tried the mask which is made from moringa leaves and seed powder, bentonite clay, french green clay and some essential oils. Mixed it with moringa oil (as I have dry skin) applied it and left it on for about 20 minutes, rinsed and my face was cleansed, yet soooo soft!  I was sold on that too!

Next was the Moringa oil - this is actually now a personal favorite. Firstly, I love the nutty smell it has, secondly a little goes a long way and it doesn't leave my skin greasy. I use it on my face and around my eyes morning and night right after my shower and before the Moringa glow lotion.

The glow lotion which is made with moringa oil, herbal extracts and a host of other skin loving oils; aids glowing, wrinkle free, firm skin. The vitamin A present in the Moringa oil promotes collagen formation which enhances skins elasticity and fights premature ageing.

There are about 4 soaps in the range - luxury, bearberry, papaya and peppermint. I opted for papaya which is known for its ability to help skin glow. All the soaps are made with Moringa oil, olive oil, coconut oil, shea butter, castor oil, natural herbs, zinc oxide and essential oils. Bearberry and papaya help get the skin glowing while peppermint helps reduce breakouts and is great for acne prone skin.

The hair oil is made from Moringa oil, herbal extracts, castor oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, Vitamin E oil and essential oils. It is supposed to promote hair growth, prevent hair loss, strengthen and cleanse the hair.

Should you be in need of deep detoxification, there are seeds that can be purchased and chewed at night before bed. There is also a lip balm which helps protect, smooth, moisturize and prevent chapped lips.

All in all, I think this is a great line and will be giving regular updates on the progress I see with each of the products I'm currently trying.

If you'd like to try them out, stop by our store or send us an email for prices and delivery information!

Till my next post

xoxo

  5. Hello KL

Thank you for this post, I've long been a Moringa lover, it's just been hard finding a dependable supplier. I'm really interested in trying out the Kalos range, they seem like serious business people.
Kindly let me know what your experience has been this past month using the oil, face lotion and mask. I have combination skin, would you advise I use these products?
For your morning weetabix, do you also add milk along with the Moringa? What else do you add to the cereal?
How has the papaya soap worked for you?
I live in Abuja, do you know if they can deliver here?
I look forward to your feedback, thanks a lot

    1. Hi Zemiata,
I've really been enjoying using the products - my favorite so far is probably the oil followed by the lotion.

Even with combination skin you can use the products as they are not greasy and the mask you can use water instead of oil (the instructions tell you what to mix depending on your skin type).

I use milk with my weetabix - either rice or almond milk and add a bit of honey to it. The papaya soap was good - disintegrated quicker than I would have liked but it is what it is lol.

I'm sure they can deliver to you in Abuja. Will speak with them and send you a message.

      Thanks!
