Protective Styling Update plus new products I'm excited about.

I almost can't believe I'm in my 6th week with these twists I installed using Marley hair! Not until recently did I start to miss my hair; I guess my mind has been in the right place with regard to retaining as much length as possible using protective styling.

Anyway I still plan to keep them in for another 2 weeks or so before I take them down, care for my hair for about a week and then it's back to another protective style (probably crochet braids)

So, last week I was trawling through the internet (as usual) and came across a post where a lady used 'Manshanu' (cow butter or cow ghee) to deep condition her hair. I was really intrigued and read up some more on it and found out that in some cultures, it has been used for centuries as a hair conditioning and growing agent. In Ethiopia for instance cow ghee is used as a hair strengthening, curling, styling and conditioning treatment and has been so used for centuries!
Curls popping! Slathered with cow ghee

Essentially fresh cow milk is boiled and then allowed to cool. On cooling, the butter separates from the liquid milk and is gently removed and used for cooking or (in this case) hair treatments!

Manshanu is predominantly found in the North and as I'm here in Lagos, I didn't see how I could get some fresh Manshanu but then it occured to me that I could get the store bought version! Indians typically call it 'Ghee' and I decided to go to Illupeju and hunt cow ghee down in all the Indian owned stores they have there!
My jar of ghee!
Luckily I mentioned this to a friend who just happened to have an extra jar of ghee to hand! Talk about the Universe conspiring to hand you what you want! So I have my jar of ghee waiting patiently for me in my bedroom amongst other goodies!!! I will definitely be doing a post on my experience with it.

Next product I'm (kinda)  excited about is something called M.T.G. Now MTG is currently sold as a mane and tail growth aid for horses, and also used for bacterial and anti fungal skin problems. This product was actually first produced in the 1930's by a barber to treat dry scalp issues (psoriasis, dandruff etc) for his customers, but they noticed spurts of growth (probably due to the high sulfur content).

He started marketing it for use on skin problems for horses and when he sold the company, the buyers focused on the animal market to the exclusion of humans and so it has been marketed as a growth and treatment remedy for horses since then even though the original formula never changed.

Anyway, a number of people have  used it as a growth aid and have reported great success with it.While I'm not even sure how consistent I will be with this seeing as I'm going to be protective styling most of this year, I thought 'what the heck'. I'll give it a try and see how much I can gain from it.

Final product I'm excited about is Hairveda's Sitrinillah deep hair masque which professes to be 'an intensive oil therapy for super dry hair' There have been nothing but rave reviews about this deep conditioner which is made with coconut oil, castor oil, orange oil and vanilla extract. So this is definitely going to be slathered on my hair after my next protein treatment and I shall be doing a review at some point too!

Its so funny that I truly wasn't thinking much about taking out my twists for now but after doing this post, I'm anxious to start using these products! lol. These twists may not last the next week if my excitement gets the better of me........

  2. Hi KL, question about your current protective style, the part of the hair that's woven, did you do it like Ghana weaving or just a regular cornrow weaving?

    1. It was a friend I ended up getting it from but you can try Bazaar - its on Ade Akinsanya Street ( I think) in Ilupeju. If you turn on to Town Planning Way from Ikorodu Road, it's the first street on the left - but you'd need to go and turn somewhere in front as you can't make a left turn there. Hope that helps!
