Combating the hot weather and maintaining moisture levels in my hair.

This heat is, well, HOT!!!!!!

I almost burst into tears some time last week because of the stifling heat - I don't get it. It's like everyday it gets hotter and hotter and even hotter. I got into my car a few days ago and on the dashboard, the outside temperature was clocked at 40 degrees!!!!!! Seriously, I think Mother Nature is pissed with us lol. Growing up in Lagos, it was never this hot but as the years have gone by, the temperature levels have gone barmy. If this is a sustained upward trend, I dread to think what will happen in the next 10 years.

Anyway enough of my bellyaching - the one thing that this endless heat and impossible humidity is doing for sure is that whatever moisture I put in my hair seems to evaporate within a few hours. So I've had to change up my regimen a little bit.

So last week I started the Green House Effect (GHE) method, (click here if you missed that post) and that has started helping as I wake up to hair that is definitely more moist. Before I leave the house, I spritz my hair quite liberally with my water and aloe vera mix and then use a bit of my whipped Shea butter to further seal in the moisture. I find that sealing with something a little heavier than oil, keeps the moisture locked in for longer.

Because I''ve been working out a lot in the mornings I may also just stick my head under the shower and do a quick co wash with my Tresemme Naturals depending on how I feel. My hair is currently in twists so I don't have to worry about detangling etc.

I find that the combination of oiling the hair at night and letting it 'steam' up while I sleep and then adding moisture a.k.a H2O and a heavier sealant (shea butter) in the morning has upped my moisture levels and my hair is not as dry as it had been.

I think for the next few weeks I'm going to leave out shampoo from my regimen altogether and do a lot of cowashing and deep conditioning and see how that goes.

Anyone else feeling the brunt of this hot weather on your tresses?

  1. Hi! I am trying to keep my natural hair, I haven't retouched my hair in 6months and I didn't have the big chop. Problem is I have no clue on what I want to do to the hair. I always have cornrows on and when I loose them, combing is a tug of way plus my hair keeps cutting from the stylist trying to detangle it. At this rate I'm really tired cos I have an 8-6 job, married with a child and not ready to spend my free hours battling with my hair. How can I please turn my hair situation around? Thank you.

  2. The hot weather is really killing me and my hair. Short of carrying my moisturizer to work, I have to soak my hair with profective leave-in which I dissolve in water and spray on my scalp. Then seal it in with coconnut oil. My hair is currently in tiny weavings (thankfully) so I don't have to worry about combing and styling in this heat.

    1. As in! It's not even funny. Good thing your hair is woven and you're quenching it's thirst religiously. I think I'm just going to braid my hair shortly.
