Detangling AND stretching your hair in the shower - How to cut your detangling time by half!
I've always been one to detangle/comb my hair only when wet or damp - either in the shower while rinsing out my deep conditioner or after rinsing and while applying leave in products. Normally this would mean that when I'm done I'd be left with a few shrunken braided sections of hair plus I'd spend a bit of time first detangling in the shower then applying products afterwards. I decided to try a a different route the last time I was detangling in the shower and I was very pleased with the results.
So in essence what I did was use the weight of the water from the shower as a detangling aid - each section I worked with, I would first finger detangle then use my wide toothed comb to comb through making sure that section was free of tangles. Now what I would usually do in the past is just braid the section loosely with my head away from the water but this time around I kept my head under the shower making sure the water was running down the section of hair. Since the weight of the water makes the hair 'hang' down and loosens up the strands, I was able to very easily braid the hair in its hanging state.
The water not only helped in detangling as my comb literally glided through my hair (when doing this, start from the tips and comb downward, in the same direction as the water) and then the weight of the water helped stretch the hair while I braided it.
Results? Stretched out, detangled hair in one step! Not to mention that the process was much shorter than if I'd done it after my shower.
When I stepped out of the shower, I tied my t shirt round my head to soak up excess water, and later used my spritz as a leave in so I wouldn't have to unravel each braid and apply product. My spritz has Aloe Vera juice (which not only conditions and moisturizes the hair, but also maintains the pH level of the hair and scalp) glycerin (which moisturizes and acts as a humectant) some of my leave in conditioner (Kinky Curly Knot Today), jojoba oil , castor oil and a few drops of Rosemary and Peppermint oil. Plus the fact that I store it in the fridge means that the cold temperature of the liquid helps to seal my cuticles back!
I let air dry overnight and the following morning took down each braid, applied my Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter moisturizer, sealed with a little coconut oil and applied my extra dark Jamaican Black Castor Oil to my scalap and that was it! Hair was stretched, detangled, nice and soft.
I couldn't ask for more!
Lol! I used to do this a lot and the braidouts from this method was really defined and lasted a long time.
ReplyDeleteI stopped and forgot when I moved to house without a shower installed. Just the tub and then the handheld shower (no holder) which made braiding and holding the showerhead quite tricky...lol!
lollllll - no way you'd be able to achieve braiding and holding the shower head! Pele dear - alternatively you can get one of those shower head brackets and fix it on the wall........
