I've been having such a relaxing week and I can't believe my one week holiday is almost over!!!! Boooo hoooooooooo! Lol!
Anyway, thought I'd pen down all I'd been thinking and planning regarding my hair. So, towards the tail end of last year, I took stock of everything I'd been doing and using on my hair and realised that in my bid to try a few things I wasn't consistent with a lot of stuff (NJoy, Hair Trigger, MTG) and I was focusing too much energy on gaining length! I mean it's nice to want to have long hair but not to the exclusion of everything (well not everything but a good number).
Another thing I discovered is that my hair doesn't particularly like direct heat - not sure if that's the right way to put it but I tried to flat iron late last year to do a length check and the final look brought back so many memories of the limp look I would have back in the day when I got a relaxer touch up lolll.
I remember going into the salon and one of my girls was like 'Aunty, what did you do to your hair?!!' with such shock and horror on her face lollllllllllll. A couple of days later when it had reverted and I was sporting a curly afro, they all said to me that I should please stick to my 'afro' look as straight hair did not suit me. Toh!
My attempt at a length check last year. Please forgive the blurry picture |
Another discovery after taking down my crochet braids was that so far, it's the best protective style for me in terms of maintaining moisture levels, having access to my scalp AND keeping my ends protected and hidden away from the elements (particularly in this dry harmattan season we're experiencing)
This is right after I'd taken down my last crochet braids - hair was moisturized, ends were soft, and scalp was not dry. |
Sooooooooo, in light of the above, I shall be switching things up a little this year namely:
1. ZERO direct heat this year : No blow outs with a hand dryer and definitely no flat irons. Maybe at the end of the year, I shall do a light blow out using the tension method but I will think on that at that time God willing.
2. No purchases of any 'miracle growth' products this year. I'm done. Lol. I know they work great for a lot of people but I shall be using patience and TLC as my own personal growth aids.
3. Crochet braids are going to be my go to protective style this year. I shall be experimenting with a lot of different looks, colors and types of hair. Just because it's protective styling doesn't mean it has to be boring!
4. I shall be incorporating a lot of natural products/ingredients into my hair care regimen. This shall include not just oils, butters and clays; but herbs, teas, seeds etc.
5. All in all, health shall be of paramount importance in everything I do and I shall also be treating my ends like the most delicately spun sugar there ever was!
So I had my first wash day yesterday and I'm currently sitting down here with my hair braided so it can dry in a nice stretched out way. Shall be bringing you all the details of the yummy ingredients that made up my wash day and my final results!
Till my next post
xoxoxo
Hahaha @ no miracle growth aids. I've never tried them, doubt I ever will. Taking my daily vitamins is already hard enough.
