A few weeks ago, a customer came in for a hair treatment (Hi Iyabo!) and she had her hair threaded in a very lovely style - I knew immediately I had to get that style on my own head asap!
Even though I knew I was going to get it done, I struggled with figuring out when exactly to get it done - particularly as I was planning on sticking to the crown and glory technique as my protective styling option this year (even though it's just the 2nd month of the year and already I've had my fill of braids - at least for now lol) and this was a little off the path of said technique.
Anyway, a few nights ago, I had an epiphany while staring off into space trying to figure out something totally unrelated: since I was gagging to have my braids out, why not take them out, have my own hair for a few days as I was missing it so much and then have it threaded by Friday (seeing as my weekends are too busy to make out some 3 hours for my hair and who knows what next week will be like?).
I've probably said it before that I'm quite impulsive so without thinking too much about it, I took out my braids, called the lady to book a home appointment (I'm also going to have her come train me and my girls in the salon) and last night, Bam! I got it done :)
Hair in sections, braided very loosely with the threading material |
Now, this threading method is completely different from what we grew up knowing - which is each section of hair is threaded with the thread directly on the hair. What she did was first braid the section with the material (which by the way is some really smooth string and not regular thread) before threading it to give it a nice chunky look. It took about 3 or so hours and I absolutely love it!!!
All sections threaded |
Having said that, trust me to now think of everything that may go wrong - my main concern now of course is moisturizing my hair through the layers of thread. I am hoping with everything in my heart that my spritz mix will be able to penetrate through and find my hair somewhere in the midst of all the thread I have on my head.
Styling in progress |
After she left, I got a few of the left over strands of thread and spritzed them with water to see how absorbent they are and this morning, i spritzed my whole head three times as much as I would normally lolll.

Anyway, she's said this is something I can keep for a month - but seeing as this is the first time and I'm not entirely sure about how the moisture will penetrate through; I will keep it in for less than a month and see how my hair has fared.
There you have it - this is the 'something' I'd alluded to in my last post. It is a great protective style as all my hair is hidden away from both the rigours of daily manipulation and the elements.
I shall keep you updated on how this goes.
Have a great weekend! xoxo

DeleteVery pretty. Tried something similar recently and loved it. As you said, keeping your hair moisturized through the thread isn't easy. For me I made sure my hair was very well moisturized before getting the style done, I spritzed it as much as possible while wearing the style, and thankfully when I took it down 3 weeks later my hair was not dry.
ReplyDeleteTrue that! Making sure the hair is super moisturized before getting the style in is key. Thank you!
Deletewhat kind of thread was used please?
ReplyDeleteHi Diyo, I forget the name but it's what tailors use for making embroidery on clothes.
DeleteHi Kemi,
ReplyDeleteYou inspired me to get this done, thanks!
Very lovely hairstyle, really protective and easy to manage.
i think i would like a DIY threading. those ones with spaces in between each threading. whenever i get around to being ready for a thread PS tho.
ReplyDeletei always feel like you have to have a matured look to pull the style off, and i have a small physique as it is already :(
Hello Kemi, I like your hairstyle can I you connect me with the person that did it. I know the post is been long, am keeping natural hair and I was looking for something simple and nice. Thanks
